Kristofer Åström „Hard Times“
Seit nunmehr 20 Jahren verkörpert Kristofer Åström wie kaum ein anderer das ungebrochen populäre, nordische Songwriting aus Schweden. 2020 erscheint nun das erste neue Studioalbum seit „The Story of a Heart Decay“ aus 2015. Es ist das insgesamt zehnte und ist mit „Hard Times” betitelt.
Die erste Vorabsingle „Inbetweener“ eröffnet das Album in sechs gefühlvollen Minuten. Åström zeigte sich froh über die Reaktionen: „I have noticed that the song touches on different emotions depending on who is listening to it; and is interpreted in different ways. I’ve always found it interesting what listeners read into my songs.“ Dementsprechend fragte er auch seine Tochter Astrid nach ihrer Meinung. Sie zeichnete daraufhin ein Bild, welches zum offizielles Artwork des Songs wurde. „It became so fitting that I wanted to use the painting as a cover. She agreed. Thanks Astrid!“ Es folgt „In the Daylight“, mit einfachem Klavier-Riff und einer Sound-Ästhetik, die Erinnerung an die Alben der frühen 2000er Jahre weckt, „So much for staying alive“ oder „Leaving Songs“. Ebenso das wunderschön intime „Another Love“, im betörenden Duett mit Britta Persson.
”Hard Times” stimmt von Beginn an in ein melancholisches Stimmungsbild ein, das sich über die gesamte Albumlänge trägt, ohne auf Dynamiken zu verzichten. Åström beherrscht die leisen ebenso wie die lauten Klänge. Gerne auch mal beides in einem Song, siehe bzw. höre ”And Then She Moved On”. Und der Schwede mag die repititive Beschwörung, wie er mit dem psychedelisch rockigem Abschluss auf ”Night Owl” beweist. Auf andere Weise berührend wird Åström auf den Liedern der Bonusvinyl, welche in limitierter 500er-Auflage dem Album beiliegt (und digital erst später erscheinen wird). ”Michelle”, das ist der Name seiner Ehefrau. Das Lied spielte er ihr zur Trauung und klingt entsprechend: hoffnungsvoll und voller Liebe.
Aufgenommen wurde das Album im legendären Silence Studio im schwedischen Niemansland, den Wäldern von Värmland. ”Being there we were completely isolated from every day life with no internet or cellular connection. We were able to totally concentrate on the recording and the songs. It seemed like a necessity to get away from everything going on in our lives at the moment and since some of us in the band live on opposite coasts we could unite in Silence and get the groove going for a few days.”
Der Albumtitel stand übrigens schon vor der Pandemie. Er ist inspiriert von Stephen Foster’s Country-Song ”Hard times come again no more”. Åström sinniert: ”Though the music on Hard Times is not Country, it certainly has the feeling of it.”
