Shanghai im Jahre 1937: Ein bald abreisender Soldat trifft während eines japanischen Luftangriffs auf eine junge Frau unter einer Brücke. Sie geloben, sich nach Kriegsende zu treffen, aber sie wissen weder den Namen noch das Gesicht des anderen.

Zehn Jahre später nimmt die junge Frau, eine Nachtclubsängerin, ein naives Mädchen frisch aus dem Land auf. Das Country-Girl verliebt sich in den Möchtegern-Songwriter im Obergeschoss, der, der Sängerin unbekannt, niemand Geringerer als der Soldat von der Brücke ist.
