Das amüsante Detektivspiel unter Regie des Hammer-Regisseurs Terence Fisher kommt dem Reiz der Detektivabenteuer von Arthur Canon Doyle sehr nahe, da besonderer Wert auf Nervenkitzel und Krimi-Atmosphäre gelegt wird.
