Der Kosakenfürst Taras Bulba, der das benachbarte Polen und seine tatarischen Verbündeten erobern will, schickt seine Söhne Ostap und Andrei zum Studium in die polnische Stadt Dubno, um mehr über die polnischen Bräuche und Stärken zu erfahren.
