Various „That’ll Flat Git It: Vol.39“

United Artists Records gehörte in den späten Fünfzigerjahren neben 20th Century Fox und Warner Bros. zur neuen Generation der von Filmstudios betriebenen US-Major-Labels und konzentrierte sich in den ersten Jahren vor allem auf Soundtrack-Alben, versuchte aber auch, Pop-Hits zu produzieren – und das Interesse der Firma am Rock’n’Roll war von Beginn an (gegen Ende des Jahres 1957) offensichtlich.

Der neueste Beitrag in Bear Family Records® ‚That’ll Flat Git It!‘-Reihe untersucht den faszinierenden frühen Rock ’n‘ Roll-Katalog von United Artists, der voller vielversprechender Sängerinnen und Sänger steckt, die nur eine oder zwei großartige Singles für das Unternehmen aufgenommen haben (Chuck Wiley, Ronnie Brent, Warren Miller, Wes Bryan, Hunt Stevens, Brein Fisher, Wendell Smith, The Four J’s), bevor sie weiterzogen, zusammen mit einer Handvoll bekannterer Namen (Al Casey, George Jones, Delbert McClinton’s Straitjackets), die für einen gewissen Ausgleich sorgen.

Lee Hazlewood und sein damaliger Partner Lester Sill produzierten eine Handvoll Rocker der späten 50er Jahre für UA, und es gibt sogar einen Hauch von Chicagoer R&B (Joyce Davis‘ Superman) und stimmungsvollem Gulf Coast Swamp Pop (Gene Thomas‘ Sometime) auf dieser unverzichtbaren Kollektion.
